Map & DescriptionThis site is located in the "Walcot & Milsom Street Gateway" area of the city, which along with Green Park Station and the Central Rail station, has been identified in the Spatial Framework as one of the three cornerstones of the "Heart of Bath".
The car park is adjacent to the Hilton Hotel, and a large multi-storey car park serving the Podium shopping centre. The surrounding buildings are generally 5-story structures, which predominantly consist of shops and cafés at the street level, although there are some office buildings further north along the riverfront. Market stalls are set up at the road-edge of the car park on Saturdays.
The area has a fairly steep natural gradient running from the road (Walcot Street) down to the river. Although the site is currently a car park, it is ideal for mixed-use redevelopment, and the designer may wish to show the possibilities for integrating ULTra into a newly-built building.
At the eastern edge of the car park the guideway must cross the river in order to connect. As there is currently no bridge in this area, there is great freedom in the design of this crossing, although it should be noted that boat trips travel up and down this part of the river, and so sufficient clearance must be maintained. As a guide, note that such boats must pass through the arches of Pulteney Bridge, which are quite restrictive.
West of the car park, the guideway must go underground, as there is no feasible overground route across that area of the city. This condition, along with the slope of the site, creates interesting possibilities for station designs which are partially elevated and partially subterranean.
Due to the challenging and complex nature of this site, ATS is considering developing a base model in Sketchup to help out-of-town designers understand the environs. If you are interested in this, please register for the competition and identify your interest in the site.
